Tu B’Av, a.k.a. the Jewish Valentine’s Day, kicks off tomorrow night—which means New Yorkers have a whole weekend to feel the love.
The Jewish Telegraphic Agency rounded up some cute ways to celebrate (think: speed dating and mixers galore), but the one that really caught our eye is Bangitout’s 22nd Annual Tu B’Av White Party, happening at Ellington in the Park, an open-air eatery in Riverside Park.
The singles-only, outdoor event is scheduled for Monday, August 11 at 7pm and it’s geared towards folks between the ages of 21 and 49. As always, attendees will be handed a number upon arrival and asked to write down the numbers of any guests they feel a connection with throughout the evening. After the party, the organizers will go through the selections and notify guests of any mutual matches.
And yes—you have to wear white. It’s tradition, and part of the fun.
“Come celebrate the Jewish holiday of Tu B’Av with 1,000 singles in Riverside Park,” reads the event’s official website. “The Talmud states that on this mystical day on the calendar, Jewish singles would go out and dance in the fields, wear white, so nobody stood out and meet/connect with their match. (requires eye contact).”
Tickets are currently available for $36, but the price goes up to $40 after August 10. Unsure if you’ll be able to make it? No worries—passes will be available at the door. That said, it might be worth buying in advance since all online tickets include a free drink. Kosher food will also be available for purchase at the party.
A final note: if it ends up raining on Monday, the party will be moved to Tuesday.
