Although there’s nothing quite as straightforward—and almost securely delicious—as a schnitzel sandwich, few kosher eateries across the city have pulled off a truly remarkable version of the dish. Turns out, arguably the very best one is actually served at Six60One, the Upper West Side kosher supermarket that debuted at 661 Amsterdam Avenue near 92nd Street at the beginning of the year.
Here it’s dubbed the “chalati”—a traditional schnitzel sandwich reimagined inside a personal challah that’s first drenched in pickled lemon sauce, chimichurri and matbucha then stuffed with roasted garlic, fried eggplant, roasted chilis and of course that perfectly crispy chicken.
A staple across Israeli shuks, the sandwich will run you $26.99 at the supermarket’s Grill Bar or closer to $33 if you’re ordering it on UberEats. In case it wasn’t obvious: it’s worth every penny. (And given its viral status, posting it on Instagram might just score you a few new followers and a whole lot of likes.)
While you’re at Six60One, you’ll probably want to wander the aisles too: stock up on classic Pereg spices, baked goods, pizza, sushi, a wide range of deli-prepped foods and of course all the kosher pantry staples your kitchen could need.
