It’s always refreshing—literally and figuratively—to explore another culture’s flavors through a kosher lens, especially when it comes to treats that aren’t commonly found in New York. Case in point: paletas, traditional Mexican popsicles typically made with fresh ingredients like mango, coconut and strawberry.

Unlike their more familiar American counterparts, paletas often include whole fruit chunks, nuts and even herbs. You’ll actually see the ingredients embedded in the icy base, which makes for ideal Instagram fodder, of course.

Now, kosher eaters in New York have a new destination to try them: Morelia Ice Cream Paletas on the Upper East Side at 1435 1st Avenue near 75th Street, recently certified kosher by the National Kosher Supervision.

Inside, a display case shows off rows of vibrant paletas in over 20 flavors. Once you pick your base, you can customize it with a range of toppings. You might coat your paleta in marshmallow fluff, dip it in chocolate or cover it with crushed nuts or sprinkles—or all of the above. The options lean maximalist.

The destination is also leaning into the social-media moment with a new Dubai chocolate paleta—filled with pistachio cream and crispy kataifi—that turns a trending dessert into something handheld and frozen.

Other flavor standouts include a dulce de leche pop filled with—you guessed it—more dulce de leche, a chocolate brownie variety dotted with actual chunks of brownie, a passion fruit option filled with condensed milk or a banana treat that is filled with Nutella.

In Spanish, paleta translates to “little stick.” And while these delicacies may be relatively small in size, there’s nothing minor about the flavor options.
