Tandir Kebab House

Union Turnpike in Queens has unofficially become the kosher Bukharian restaurant hub of NYC—and it’s only growing. The latest addition: Tandir Kebab House, a new kosher Bukharian grill that just opened at 188-09 Union Turnpike.

As first reported by Yeah That’s Kosher, the eatery is certified glatt kosher by the Vaad of Queens and offers a menu of Bukharian staples. Expect a vast array of kebabs—from lamb ribs and fat to beef hanger, chicken wings and veal liver—alongside traditional entrees like plov, a one-pot rice pilaf with slow-cooked meat, yellow carrots, onions and cumin, and khanum, steamed dumplings filled with vegetables or meat. Don’t skip the lula kebab, made from ground meat on skewers cooked over an open flame and traditionally enjoyed with fresh bread.

The menu also includes house-prepared pickled vegetables—cabbage, tomatoes, eggplant, olives and mushrooms—all prepared using classic pickling methods, a cornerstone of Bukharian cuisine.

The kitchen also prepares samsa, a flaky, savory pastry filled with meat or vegetables, a beloved snack in Bukharian cuisine—you can watch how the restaurant makes it right here.

The space itself is no-frills yet decidedly intentional, reflecting the style of other nearby Bukharian restaurants, including Cheburechnaya and Hot Spot BBQ & Grill.

Although we’re here to celebrate the opening of any Jewish business, we feel particularly excited about the intentionality of Tandir Kebab House because there’s something to be said about restaurants that concentrate on a spceific cuisine and try to be the very best at their craft.
