On Friday, November 21, 3,000 people are expected to celebrate Shabbat together at Javits North, inside the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on 11th Avenue, as part of The Big Shabbat—a massive event organized by Gady Levy, executive director of the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center in Manhattan. Levy hopes the gathering will make it into the Guinness Book of World Records, surpassing the current record: a 2,322-person Shabbat dinner held in Berlin in 2015 during the European Maccabi Games.

The event—organized in partnership with UJA-Federation of New York—will feature a family-style vegetarian meal prepared by In Thyme Catering in collaboration with Yalla Teaneck and “curated” by four celebrated Jewish food personalities: Beejhy Barhany, Jake Cohen, Joan Nathan and Adeena Sussman. The food, including 300 challahs, will be certified kosher by the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County, New Jersey.

According to the event’s official website, ten chefs and 45 assistants will be cooking the fare, which will then be served to the 3,000 attendees by over 150 servers.

The sit-down portion of the evening will last one hour—from the recitation of the hamotzi onward—per Guinness World Records rules.

Beyond the meal, guests will get to enjoy drink stations, activities for both kids and adults, live music and more—including the chance to win a trip to Israel. A replica of the Kotel will be on site, where attendees can write notes to be placed in the real Kotel by the winner of the Israel trip. How cool?

Doors open at 5:45pm, with appetizers, live music and entertainment beginning at 6pm as guests take their seats. A “big moment” is scheduled for 8:30pm, when the Israel trip winner will be announced, followed by dessert and more music. The evening will wrap up at 10pm with a “big Shabbat shalom,” as promised on the event’s official website.

Tickets—priced at $54 per person—go on sale Monday, August 11, right here, offering New Yorkers a rare chance to be part of a record-breaking Shabbat celebration. See you there?
