There’s a fine line between a gimmicky menu item that’s all about Instagram clout and a creative twist on a classic dish. The Crazy Crispy Pita at Zoares Kosher Grill in Brooklyn falls squarely in the latter category, but it still manages to be seriously Instagram-worthy.
The restaurant, which opened at 2486 Coney Island Avenue last June, has only been serving this wild creation for a few months.
“One day, we thought, ‘What if we coated laffa and pita like schnitzel?’” says a spokesperson. “The laffa turned out really good but was impossible to wrap after getting crispy, which is why we then tried pita. We loved the taste and texture so much that we decided to redo our menu and sell it.”
Fast forward to today, and the kitchen cranks out around 250 Crazy Crispy Pitas daily. The process? Simple: coat the pita in breadcrumbs, season it like schnitzel, deep fry it until it puffs up, then slice the top and stuff it with whatever meaty filling you’re craving.
Currently, the most popular fillings are premium ribeye steak and lamb fat shawarma, though kabobs, schnitzel and other options are available, too.
A quick look at the photos is enough to make you want to try it, but the staff makes it clear just how tasty the food is.
“It’s like eating two foods in one—a pita and a schnitzel—and somehow, it tastes even better than you’d expect,” says the spokesperson.
A true culinary win, and a social media star in its own right.
