One of the most visually striking Passover-related traditions in New York is back for its 51st iteration tomorrow. A fleet of “mitzvah tanks”—converted RVs that promote Jewish customs and traditions—will ride through the streets of the city, raising awareness about the upcoming holiday and encouraging people to partake in good deeds.

The convoy will kick things off at Chabad World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, before spreading out to 15 different locations across the five boroughs.

At each stop, volunteers will be handing out free boxes of shmurah matzah while inviting passersby to give tzedakah and, perhaps, say a prayer.

“The tanks also offer Jewish literature and Jewish students ready to answer questions about Judaism and Passover traditions,” according to an official press release.

Organized by Chabad-Lubavitch, the event first began in 1974 as a way to uplift Jewish spirits following the Yom Kippur War. Given the current state of affairs—rising antisemitism and the ongoing plight of hostages—this year’s convoy feels especially timely and important.

“A recent Pew survey revealed that a quarter of all Jews aren’t connected to their heritage,” said Rabbi Mordy Hirsch, director of the Mitzvah Tanks organization, in an official statement. “Our mitzvah tanks transform everyday street corners into opportunities for connection. We’re bringing the joy and spirit of Passover directly to the people and reigniting the Jewish spark within their souls.”

If you happen to see one of these RVs while walking around NYC tomorrow, make sure to stop, wave hello and, perhaps, do a good deed.
