Caffe Alon

The Upper West Side has never really had a kosher coffee shop worth building a morning around. There are a handful of grab-and-go spots, but nothing that feels like a destination in and of itself. Café Alon, a new kosher café and bakery, is aiming to change that. Set to open on the ground floor of a 29-story building at 200 West End Avenue by 70th Street in the next couple of months, Café Alon is positioning itself as a premium, boutique operation. Basically, something closer to what you’d expect from a serious specialty café than anything currently serving kosher coffee north of 72nd Street.

The shop comes courtesy of Ofer Puder, an experienced restaurant operator based in Israel, and the concept is being built with real intention behind it: a strong community identity paired with a product positioning that suggests this isn’t a bagel counter with an espresso machine bolted on. Even the name has some weight to it: Alon, Puder’s son’s name, is Hebrew for oak tree, evoking the stability and permanence the brand is clearly going for.

According to an official spokesperson, the menu isn’t locked yet, but the outline points toward a Mediterranean-leaning café: pastries and baked goods, gourmet sandwiches, classic grilled cheese options, burekas and more. Coffee and other beverages are part of the plan too, though specifics are still being worked out.

Planned hours are 6:30am to 6pm daily, closed Saturdays and Jewish holidays—early enough to catch the actual morning rush, which UWS regulars will appreciate if the coffee’s good enough to justify getting there before work.

There’s no firm opening date yet, and the menu could still shift before it does. But a kosher café on the Upper West Side actually built around fresh baking and a real beverage program, instead of just existing because the neighborhood needs something, is worth keeping an eye on. We’ll have more once the menu’s finalized.
