Although not kosher for Passover, this limited-edition themed ice cream sundae is sure to get you in the mood for the upcoming holiday.
Served at Chelsea Market through the end of the month or until sold out, the Passover-themed treat is the brainchild of ice cream shop Seed + Mill and the Matzo Project.
The ice cream is made by combining oat milk with tahina, sugar and salt. It is then blended, inserted into the ice cream machine on site, where it gets churned, frozen and then topped with halva, even more tahina and a cinnamon matzah cracker that is coated in caramel. It is decadent, freaking delicious and absolutely worth the calories.
Although clearly marketed to the folks celebrating the Jewish holiday, it’s important to note that the sundae, which is vegan and gluten free (minus the crackers, which you don’t have to order), is not certified kosher for Passover as the seeds in the tahina are considered kitniyot.
Although all the ingredients are technically kosher, they don’t all boast the certification.
As they are wont to do, locals have taken to social media to sing the praises of the sweet offering.
“I was just there and had this ice cream last weekend,” one user wrote on Instagram. “SO GOOD.”
“I need this,” someone else noted.
Seed + Mill, which operates a counter that specializes in sesame seed-based desserts and spreads in Chelsea Market, is constantly churning out different types of culinary goodies that, somehow, always hit the right notes. But there’s something about the combination of the crunchy matzah cracker and the cold tahina that will make you want to have dessert for breakfast, lunch and dinner all month long.
