We’ve got not so great news coming your way: beloved chain Patis Bakery has filed Chapter 11, basically declaring bankruptcy.
Although that obviously doesn’t sound good, you shouldn’t despair just yet. To put it simply, Chapter 11 means that the business in question is trying to reorganize and figure out a plan to repay creditors while maintaining operations as they are. Chapter 7, on the other hand, would basically force the company to sell assets to pay creditors back.
What that practically means to you is that some Patis stores will stay open and that all gift cards will, for now, be honored. But since you never know what is going to happen, especially when it comes to kosher restaurants in NYC, we suggest you go grab yourself a pastry and use up your credit soon.
While we wait to hear about what the restructuring will look like and whether the business will be able to stay afloat, here’s a bit about Patis: the bakery operates 14 different locations throughout NYC and New Jersey, each one serving top-notch sweet products alongside heftier food options like sandwiches (the sunrise focaccia with shiitake mushrooms is delicious, as is the spicy salmon bahn mi), salads and more. Of course, all sorts of coffee drinks pepper the menu as well.
Given the current status of affairs when it comes to kosher cafés in New York, the potential closure of Patis would be a big hit to the city’s culinary scene. Here’s to hoping things won’t end up actually changing.
