The viral crookie trend has officially invaded New York’s kosher scene: Maison Valero, the French kosher bakery at 501 Avenue M in Brooklyn’s Midwood neighborhood, is now serving its take on the dessert seen all across TikTok.
“We’ve taken our fresh, dairy-free croissant, sliced it in half and filled it with our house special chocolate chunk cookie dough,” explains an official spokesperson for the bakery. “[We then] baked it with a crispy chocolate chunk cookie above.”
The treat is selling for $6, which is basically the price of any type of to-go dessert these days, and will be available through, at least, September.
“We might extend it if it does well,” says the rep.
While at Maison Valero, you might want to indulge in some more delicacies available on site and pretend you’re in France.
The mille-fleuille is almost always out of stock, so get your hands on it if you see it on display. The macarons are also a must-try, as is the pistachio éclair, the viennoise au chocolat and the strawberry croissant.
But if it’s a true taste of the traditional that you are after, don’t look past the classic croissant and all the breads being made here, starting with the baguette. When it comes to baked goods, there is something about simplicity and tradition that goes a long way—especially when developed and presented by actual experts, which is exactly the case at this Brooklyn bakery.
Started as a pandemic project out of their Brooklyn apartment, Masion Valero is the brainchild of husband-and-wife team Elie and Oshra Valero (“maison” means home in French).
Born and trained in Paris, Elie is a master baker that, alongside his wife, was able to grow the business from an online-only endeavor to a brick-and-mortar bakery smack-dab in the middle of Brooklyn.
Trust us: you’re going to head to Brooklyn for the kosher crookie but you’re likely going to stick around for just about anything else being made at Maison Valero.
