As the weather warms up, kosher foodies should consider flocking to the Arthouse Hotel at 222 West 77th Street by Broadway on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, where a charming new kosher café has just opened to much fanfare. Dubbed Le Lis Café, the spot offers breakfast and lunch options both inside the hotel’s spacious lobby—where there’s also free Wi-Fi!—and outdoors, an ideal setting for people-watching.

“We are super glad to be here and serve hotel guests and the Jewish community with fresh, certified kosher products in a great environment,” Matthew Cappellanes, who owns the cafe with his wife Larissa Silva, said to Pretty Kosher.
When it comes to food, everything on the café’s drool-worthy Instagram feed looks like a must-try. Standout items include the avocado toast topped with pickled red onions and feta on white sourdough, the smoked salmon sandwich on a mini baguette and the wide variety of bagel options—all among the café’s most popular offerings, according to Cappellanes, who previously worked with the kosher Patis Bakery.

There are also three salads available—grilled salmon, tuna and Caesar—each priced at around $18.
Don’t miss out on the “viennoiserie” selection, featuring classic French breakfast pastries. Opt for a parve chocolate hazelnut croissant, a strawberry croissant, a cinnamon roll or a pain suisse, each priced at $7.
“Our strawberry jam yogurt is also a big hit during the early mornings,” revealed Cappellanes.
And then there’s the extensive espresso-based drinks menu, with favorites like cappuccinos, lattes, macchiatos, Americanos and hot chocolate.

As for the name, “le lis” means “the lily” in French. “My wife loves the flower!,” said Cappellanes.
Given the buzz this opening has generated on Instagram, Le Lis Café clearly knows what it’s doing. And really, what’s better than sipping a coffee outdoors in NYC’s spring weather—perhaps with a croissant in hand as well?
