Iconic NYC kosher steakhouse Wolf & Lamb is officially moving after 30 years in midtown

There are very few kosher restaurants in New York that feel less like restaurants and more like institutions. Wolf & Lamb, the midtown steakhouse that has almost defined the neighborhood for three decades, is one of them, so news of its closure and imminent re-opening at a different address has obviously raised some eyebrows. Before you start mourning the loss of a kosher stalwart, though take a breath: Wolf & Lamb is simply moving and not even that far away.

The announcement came on Instagram. “It is with a deep sense of gratitude and appreciation that we prepare for our last day of service at our current 48th Street location,” reads the post from two days ago. “We look forward to welcoming you soon to our new midtown location, just a short walk away, where we will continue creating memorable experiences together.”

Pretty Kosher reached out to Wolf & Lamb by email for additional details but had not heard back by publication. We also called the restaurant, where an automated phone message confirms that the restaurant is relocating after 30 years to a spot “just a short 10-minute walk away.” So far, there’s no word on the exact address, when the new location will open or whether diners should expect any changes to the menu.

For kosher New Yorkers, it’s hard to overstate Wolf & Lamb’s place in New York’s restaurant landscape. Located at 16 East 48th Street, the midtown steakhouse helped define what upscale kosher dining could look like long before beautifully designed eateries with ambitious wine lists became commonplace. The restaurant built a loyal following around classic steakhouse fare, house-butchered glatt kosher meats and an atmosphere that has made it a go-to for business lunches, family celebrations, dates and tourists looking for a polished kosher meal in the heart of Manhattan.

Wolf & Lamb has expanded over the years—including a Brooklyn outpost that later closed following the pandemic—but its Manhattan flagship has remained a constant.

For now, fans will have to wait a little longer to find out exactly where that next chapter begins. The good news is that they won’t need to travel to an entirely new neighborhood to get a proper steak.
