In its own way, New York is the land of cookies. Unfortunately, many of the top-rated options (Levain! Orwashers! Maman!) don’t boast a kosher certification. That’s unlikely to change anytime soon—but kosher palates will take what they can get, especially when the cookie gods bestow their blessing on this humble editor’s own pick for best cookie purveyor in New York: Insomnia Cookies.

Although the company’s location inside Penn Station—the brand’s 22nd store in the city—first opened back in 2024, it just recently received a kosher stamp of approval, as reported by Instagram account @foodbydaniella.

The Penn Station shop is now the second kosher Insomnia Cookies in New York, joining the branch at 176-69 Union Turnpike in Fresh Meadows. The Upper West Side store at 405 Amsterdam Avenue began flaunting a kashrut certificate in 2018, but according to a call Pretty Kosher placed to the store this week, that location is not currently kosher.

So, what makes Insomnia Cookies treats so delectable? In primis, their texture: soft to the touch, they almost melt in your mouth even hours after first purchasing them (no need to heat them up, I promise).

The flavors on offer are also worthy of mention, mostly because of their simplicity. The entire menu is basically dedicated to traditional flavors and, if there is one thing this city has forgotten, it’s the importance of tradition—and I’m perhaps not just talking about the culinary kind. Sugar, white chocolate macadamia, oatmeal raisin, snickerdoodle and chocolate chunk are go-tos, and they obviously taste even better with a scoop of ice cream on top.

See you at Insomnia Cookies on the next cheat day?
