New Yorkers usually fall into two camps: those who swear by their traditional bagel orders and those two treat the iconic food like a blank canvas for culinary creativity. If you’re part of the latter group, listen up: Modern Bread and Bagel, the all gluten-free kosher bakery with four locations across Manhattan, is currently serving a French toast bagel as its special for the month. The catch, though, is that April is coming to a close, which means you have just about a day left to get your hands on this thing before it disappears into the “seasonal special” abyss.
The gastronomic creation starts with a warm, cinnamon-spiced bagel that gets brushed with vegan maple butter while it’s still steaming, ensuring the flavor soaks right into the dough. It’s then finished with a crunch of coffee cake crumbs and a dusting of maple sugar. Honestly, it sounds so sweetly decadent that it feels more like a dessert than anything else, perfect to be eaten solo—no schmear required. But we’re not here to gatekeep: if you want to shove some cream cheese in there, you do you.
Modern Bread and Bagel is no stranger to these types of treats, having previously dropped inventions like the churro bagel and an apple cider donut option that tasted like upstate orchards. Clearly, they know what they are doing.
You can grab the French toast bagel at any of their four NYC outposts before the end of April.
