If you’re looking for a casual dairy lunch spot in Manhattan, consider the newly opened Ama La Vita, a cafe and pizzeria at 121 West 19th Street by Sixth Avenue in Chelsea, an area until now pretty much devoid of kosher destinations.
The restaurant takes over the space formerly occupied by Sushi Tokyo, seeking to satisfy both the breakfast and lunch crowds with freshly baked pastries, classic coffee and tea drinks and three different types of personal pies: margherita, New York-style and olive.
The menu is clearly limited but, perhaps, that will be Ama La Vita’s key to success: a few items on offer, but done well.
For the time being, Ama La Vita (which translates to “love life” from the Italian) is open Mondays through Thursdays from 7am to 6pm, Fridays from 7am to 4pm and Sundays from 9am to 7pm.
If craving a more substantial meal, you might want to venture East from the area, heading to famous glatt kosher deli Mendy’s on Park Avenue South and 30th Street or, perhaps, indulging in some Indian food at the always-good Pongal on Lexington Avenue and 27th Street.
