Long Island will soon welcome a brand-new kosher restaurant: Chiyoda, a kosher Chinese and sushi eatery, will soft-open at 20 South Station Plaza, right by the Great Neck LIRR station, this Monday, March 11. According to an official spokesperson, the restaurant is expected to open for full service by the end of the month.

Chiyoda is the creation of Chinese sushi chef Zheng Wen Shi. Although not Jewish, Shi has spent over a decade working in kosher kitchens across Long Island. He was the sushi chef at the popular Great Neck restaurant La Pizzeria for ten years and has also operated a sushi catering business in the area—also named Chiyoda—offering decadent rolls, fresh sashimi and more during private events.

“He’s been very, very careful with the kashrut process,” says Simon Goltche, the building’s real estate agent, who is also serving as the restaurant’s spokesperson. Chiyoda has obtained a VHQ kosher certification.

While the menu may still undergo slight adjustments, it will primarily feature high-end sushi and Japanese dishes—think grilled hamachi collar, hand rolls, tuna tartare, sashimi and more. There will also be a small selection of Chinese dishes.

“He didn’t want to offer an extensive Chinese menu, so he’s focusing on classic options,” Goltche explains. Offerings include General Tso’s chicken, beef ramen, hot and sour soup, sesame chicken and other traditional options.

During the soft-opening phase, Chiyoda, which has about 50 indoor seats plus a few bar seats, will serve beer and wine. The owner has already applied for a full liquor license, which he hopes to secure alongside an outdoor dining permit that will allow staff to set up tables outdoors during warmer months.

As for the name, Chiyoda is a district in Japan, a piece of Japanese culture that Shi hopes to bring to Long Island.
