A few months ago, we introduced you to Falafel Plant, a new kosher falafel spot inside the subway station market beneath Columbus Circle. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on one of the eatery’s most unique offerings: a chocolate falafel donut, topped with a sprinkle of pistachio crunch. Not only is it delicious but it also makes for visually striking Instagram content.

“We were inspired by the chocolate trend in Dubai,” says owner Karen Mashiach when asked about the dessert. “We’re very creative in the kitchen and love to experiment. People are loving them! It’s hard to keep them in stock!”

The gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan donuts are made using the restaurant’s signature falafel batter, which is in turn prepared with fresh chickpeas, herbs and sesame. They’re drizzled with tahini and organic chocolate, then finished with a dash of maple syrup and chopped pistachio crunch.

Though mostly savory (making it part of Falafel Plant’s appetizer menu), the donut has a subtle sweetness that makes it a perfect dessert after enjoying the Middle Eastern dishes offered at the eatery.

If you’re in the mood for something a bit more traditional—and sweeter—for dessert, try the baklava: a layered filo pastry filled with nuts and honey, sure to revive your taste buds with just one bite. Or, indulge in the malabi: a dairy-free, rose water-infused milk pudding topped with shredded coconut and crushed pistachios, served in a giant cup.

Basically, you can’t go wrong at Falafel Plant.
