This is a pretty big deal: the ultra-popular vegan Szechuan spot, Spicy Moon, founded by June Kwan in 2019 in the East Village, is officially going kosher. The restaurant has earned its kosher certification under the guidance of Lighthouse Kosher and joins a growing list of vegan restaurants across Manhattan that have made the same move.

A longtime favorite among vegan, non-kosher New Yorkers, Spicy Moon is sure to draw in a new crowd of customers who follow Jewish dietary laws. The restaurant’s four locations have already established themselves, perfecting their culinary crafts over the past six years and earning spots on numerous “best-of” lists for both vegan and Szechuan food. Kosher New Yorkers will likely appreciate the vibe and service of these newly kosherized spots, which stand apart from more “traditional” kosher restaurants that may serve great food but lack the same level of experience and atmosphere.

Speaking of food: you can expect Chinese favorites like mapo tofu, dan dan noodles, ramen, and fried rice—all made vegan-style—alongside traditional dishes like dumplings, General Tso’s mushrooms, and veggie buns. Each of the four locations offers a true Chinese food feast, sure to delight the senses, complemented by creative cocktails served at the restaurants.

No official word yet on when the restaurants will officially be kosher-certified, but it’s safe to say it won’t be long.
