Despite the recent surge of kosher BBQ spots in New York, including the new-ish Chief Smokehouse in Queens, Izzy’s Smokehouse at 660 Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side has officially closed its doors.
A local favorite for kosher BBQ, Izzy’s shared the news with followers via an Instagram story earlier this week.
“We want to thank you all for your wonderful support throughout the years,” the post reads. “It has been a pleasure serving the neighborhood and all its great people. We will be waiting for you with open arms at our Brooklyn location. Our heart and home.”
As mentioned in the social media update, the original Crown Heights location will remain open, continuing to serve loyal customers.
The closure of Izzy’s Upper West Side location, which opened in 2020, leaves just one kosher BBQ spot in the neighborhood: Graze Smokehouse at 100 West 83rd Street.
While the restaurant did not offer specific reasons for the closure, the challenges facing the New York food scene—such as high rent, rising ingredient costs, and inconsistent foot traffic—could have played a role.
Today marks the last day of service for the Upper West Side location, with hours until 10pm to grab classic BBQ staples like brisket, pulled beef and Texas-style smoked meats.
