The much-anticipated Anne Frank exhibit, featuring a full-scale replica of her annex, will officially open in New York on January 27 to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. The organizers have also announced that, to encourage attendance, New York City public school student groups will be able to visit the exhibition free of charge.
The staff has also developed a curriculum for teachers across the country, designed to combat the rising trends of antisemitism. According to an official press release, these educational initiatives are made possible through financial support from Barbra Streisand, the Gray Foundation, and the Fuhrman Family Foundation.
“The Anne Frank House, one of Europe’s most visited historical sites and entrusted with Anne’s legacy by her father Otto, is dedicated to educating people about the Holocaust and the prejudices underlying antisemitism and other forms of discrimination,” said Ronald Leopold, Executive Director of the Anne Frank House, in an official statement. ““By launching our new exhibition in New York, we will expand our global commitment to countering antisemitism through secondary education. […] Anne Frank’s diary has, for generations, resonated with young people across the world who see themselves reflected in her words and experiences. The exhibition, with the complementary resources for classrooms across the United States, promises to be a transformative experience for students, offering a powerful connection to a girl who, at the time of writing, was close to their own age.”
More specifically, the offered curriculum analyzes the very concept of antisemitism in a modern historical context, also exploring the false racial theories that the Nazis adopted about the Jewish people during the Holocaust.
“We have a collective responsibility to create meaningful opportunities for students everywhere to engage with history,” said Streisand in an official statement. “In the face of rising antisemitism, it is crucial that we answer ignorance with education and promote understanding.”
