Perhaps the most celebrated kosher bakery in NYC, Michaeli Bakery has just opened a new outpost at the Marlene Meyerson JCC, located at 334 Amsterdam Avenue near 76th Street, bringing Adir Michaeli’s renowned creations to the Upper West Side.

The original bakery, which opened in 2019 at 115A Division Street on the Lower East Side, continues to attract large crowds—and for good reason. Michaeli’s pastries are inspired by Israeli flavors but crafted in a way that resonates with the diverse tastes of New Yorkers accustomed to global cuisine. The chef’s babkas and burekas, in particular, are fan favorites.

Building on the success of the downtown location, Adir opened a second bakery on the Upper East Side at 401 East 90th Street in 2022, which has also proven to be quite popular.

The JCC address, currently in soft-opening mode, operates under an International Kosher Council (IKC) certification, the same one boasted by the other locations, each one closed on Shabbat and holidays. For now, the new spot offers a limited menu during limited hours—7am to 2pm (or until sold out). Customers can enjoy a selection of rugalach, babkas, burekas and Irving Farm coffee. According to an official spokesperson, “additional cafe items will be available in the coming weeks.”

“Once fully operational, the café will offer warmed pastries, soups, salads and paninis,” the spokesperson shared with Pretty Kosher.

“To offer Israeli/Jewish food at the JCC is a perfect match,” Michaeli told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. “At the Lower East Side, we have mostly locals. On the Upper East Side, there are many Jewish customers who visit the bakery daily. I believe the same will happen on the Upper West Side once locals know we’re here.”

The new Michaeli Bakery joins a number of other culinary propositions around the city operating within local cultural destinations: chef David Teyf’s Lox Cafe recently opened inside the Jewish Museum to much fanfare, taking over a space previously occupied by Russ & Daughters, and Ren is a high-end kosher restaurant currently operating within popular Brooklyn destination World Spa. It’s a trend—and we’re here for it.
