Upper West Siders, rejoice!
Safta’s is a delightful new coffee and pastry shop that’s now officially open at 2345 Broadway by 86th Street in Manhattan, offering the neighborhood a vast range of bagels, fresh sandwiches and coffee drinks under Rabbi Avrohom Marmorstein’s kashrut certificate.
The name safta, which means grandma in Hebrew, truly encapsulates the cozy vibe inside.

“It’s an endearing term,” owner Sonny Gindi said to West Side Rag about the store’s moniker.
“It’s supposed to make people feel like they’re home.” According to the outlet, Safta’s will also have a freezer section filled with kosher products like puff pastries, waffles and more. “My goal is to have this to be like a community center for the people around us,” said Gindi, who also runs midtown kosher market Fridges.

The menu at Safta’s, which looks just like the ones distributed across old school delis, is chock-full of bagel and sandwich options, sweet and savory treats and a whole lot of different coffee-based drinks.
We suggest you forego creating your own bread-based concoction and instead opt for the classic bagel and lox or the za’atar avocado bagel. Must-haves include a dairy focaccia shakshouka with a sunny-side-up egg or a tuna-based version of the sandwich. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, go for the cinnamon and chocolate babka or, perhaps, the almond croissant.

An official spokesperson also tells Pretty Kosher that Safta’s offers will be dishing out ready-to-go salads and other refrigerated foods.
“Those options are just as creative as the rest of the menu,” says the rep.
While any addition to the city’s kosher scene is typically a welcome one, there’s something particularly special about Safta’s. Maybe it’s the vibe of the place or the easygoing concept—feels just like hanging out at grandma’s house.
