Malka on the Upper West Side

For the first time since debuting on the Upper West Side in 2023, Malka, Eyal Shani‘s first kosher restaurant in the U.S., will open its doors for Shabbat dinner on Friday nights starting July 24.

The move feels almost inevitable. In just a few years, Malka has become a cornerstone of Manhattan’s kosher dining scene, helping redefine what kosher cuisine in the city can look like alongside its Dumbo sister restaurant, which opened in 2024. And with Shabbat dinners enjoying a resurgence across New York, around family tables, in synagogues and at restaurants, it was only a matter of time before Malka joined the tradition.

The restaurant announced the news on Instagram yesterday. “Gather around the table for a lavish prix fixe menu featuring Malka favorites alongside exclusive Shabbat specials from our kitchen,” reads the post.

Although the restaurant has not shared the full menu, we imagine that the feast will feature some of Shani’s greatest hits: the now-legendary potato-stuffed schnitzel, his famous “bag of green beans” (exactly what it sounds like: a paper bag filled with blistered green beans tossed with lemon, garlic and salt) and an array of vibrant salatim, the colorful assortment of small salads, dips and vegetable dishes that traditionally kick off a meal across much of the Middle East and have become a signature of Shani’s cooking.

According to the post, reservations include desserts, unlimited red and white wine, signature cocktails and soft drinks as well.

To celebrate the launch, Malka is offering the meal at $150 per person, excluding tax and gratuity, on opening nights: July 24 and July 31. All following Friday meals will cost $180 per guest, plus service gratuity and tax.

Reservations are currently open on Resy right here, although it seems like the debut Shabbat dinner is already sold out. That’s all to say: snag a reservation for any upcoming Friday night meal at Malka ASAP—they’re going fast.
