When iconic NYC ice cream destination Ample Hills Creamery officially turned kosher, the Internet erupted with excitement. Now, there’s even more reason to celebrate: starting today, the beloved scoop shop is debuting three new ice cream and sorbet flavors in collaboration with Heatonist, the NYC hot sauce store behind the viral web show Hot Ones.
But don’t expect the usual chocolate-packed or caramel-swirled treats to pepper the menu: the new flavors are all about the heat. In fact, one of them is so spicy that customers will have to sign a waiver before taking their first bite.
Called Sweet Regret, the new drop is made with Carolina Reaper peppers, among the hottest in the world, measuring between 1.5 and 2.2 million Scoville Heat Units (that’s roughly 300 times hotter than a jalapeño pepper.) After signing the waiver, brave customers will receive a mini cup dubbed the “Little Dipper” along with a small carton of milk to help cool the burn.
To balance out the spice, the ice cream also features strawberries, strawberry purée and red beet, adding a touch of sweetness to the fiery kick.
The other two limited-edition flavors are Devil Food’s, a chocolate ice cream packed with chocolate brownies and cayenne pepper, and Hot Mango, a vegan mango sorbet finished with Tajín and cayenne pepper.
All three flavors will be available at the following Ample Hills locations:
- Prospect Heights, Brooklyn at 623 Vanderbilt Avenue
- Ample Hills Creamery at The Social at 816 Washington Avenue
- Upper West Side at 526 Amsterdam Avenue
- Astoria at 34-02 30th Avenue
Sweet Regret will also be available from an Ample Hills ice cream cart popping up outside the Heatonist shop at 121 Wythe Avenue in Williamsburg beginning tomorrow, June 27. The cart will operate every Saturday and Sunday through July 26 from noon to 8pm.
Yes, you’ll have to sign the waiver there, too. And if the thought of voluntarily eating Carolina Reaper ice cream sounds a little too adventurous, don’t worry: the cart will also be scooping plenty of Ample Hills’ less intimidating flavors.
