The Jewish Museum is giving its Young Patrons Soirée the run of the building on Wednesday, October 21, with an evening that combines an open bar with access to its current exhibitions. From 7pm to 10pm, guests can move through all four floors of the Upper East Side museum, with live music and light bites from the kosher restaurant downstairs, LOX, on the program.
The evening, which costs $144 for nonmembers and $54 for members, offers a chance to see the museum’s fall exhibitions while attending a cocktail party, with enough going on upstairs to make the art a substantial part of the plan.
In regards to said exhibits, here’s a bit about them. On the first floor, “Modernity and Opulence: Women of the Wiener Werkstätte” examines the women who helped shape the influential Viennese design workshop, with particular attention to its Jewish artists and patrons. Of the workshop’s nearly 200 documented women artists, about one in four had a Jewish connection, according to research cited by the museum.
The second floor takes up a different question about cultural exchange. “Sacred Splendor: Jewish Ritual Art and Christian Treasures from St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague” brings together more than 160 objects to examine how Jewish and Christian sacred art developed within shared artistic and urban environments in Central Europe. It considers those connections alongside the distinct religious purposes the objects served.
Upstairs, the collection presentation, “Identity, Culture, and Community,” gives the evening a broader sweep through Jewish art and history. The fourth-floor Pruzan Family Center for Learning devotes a floor-to-ceiling installation to Hanukkah lamps, with more than 130 examples drawn from the museum’s collection. For anyone who has yet to see the museum’s renewed upper floors, the party doubles as a reason to spend time in them.
The event is open to guests 21 and older, and the listed dress code is cocktail attire. We should also note that the event listing says dietary laws are observed. Tickets are available right here.
