It has been over a year since the first rumors regarding the opening of a kosher grocery store at the same Upper West Side address where Seasons Kosher used to operate started making the rounds online. This week, those rumors were finally put to rest: novel grocery shop Six60One just debuted at 661 Amsterdam Avenue (see what they did there?) by 92nd Street.
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, the shop is owned by Itzik Benabou, who also operates three other kosher businesses in Crown Heights: The Market Place, Kol Tuv Grocery and House of Glatt.
Inside, patrons can shop for usual pantry staples alongside ready-made food from the deli, sushi options, pizza and bakery goods. A butcher and catering services are on site as well.
Although there are certainly other kosher shops in the area, according to reports, Six60One offers a wider range of products that fall within a generally lower price range.
“It’s not the only kosher store in the neighborhood, but it looks like it’ll be the biggest one, with the most new kosher products and the most available to us — ‘us’ meaning people who only buy kosher products,” said Judith Falk, the creator of the Upper West Side Shtetl Facebook group, to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Similar comments could be seen online as well.
“Finally good quality kosher food,” a user noted on an Instagram post by the new business.
“Yummy and not too expensive Shabbos take out,” someone else wrote.
With Ouri’s commanding the kosher grocery store scene on the Upper East Side, Six60One is uniquely positioned to attract shoppers from across Central Park. The demand is clearly present—let’s hope the supply can keep pace in the coming months.
